Car history:
February 10, 1965. I was 7, he was 22. My 283 engine, 4-speed and hardtop were missing; dont ask. He took me home. Weve been together almost 42 years. Now, its time to say goodbye.
In 1966, he bought a new-in-the-box Special High Performance 427; a Crate Motor today, a Rat Motor then. Out of the box it went to the machine shop. Each rod was precisely balanced as were the massive 12.5:1 pistons, wrist pins and the forged steel crank. The 4 bolt mains, camshaft journals, decks and cylinders were perfectly square. The rectangular port iron heads were milled .050; the compression is fierce.
An extraordinary engine, it screams RPMs like a cat in a room full of rockers. The steel crank and flywheel never failed. The engine is as strong as it was when built to Mickey Thompsons 550hp specs 39 years and less than 10,000 miles ago.
In 67, Joe Hunt setup a Vertex magneto. It worked well, but the Mallory Unilite programmable works better. The generator and regulator still function. The Wonder Bar radio may or may not. He didnt care; my exhaust plays Muscle Car Thunder. . . . Listen.
He replaced the Corvette rear end with a complete housing and 3rd member (3.23:1) from a 57 Olds (an exact width match!). Its thick axles never broke. A custom made driveshaft and leaf springs behind a 70 Muncie 4-spd always held the massive torque; tires back in the day, did not. The Goodrich T/A Radials are now 31 years old. Its been a long time since we cruised the boulevards of Dallas or busted a radar trap north of Amarillo at 160+ earning a Courtesy Citation for loud mufflers.
With skilled hands he crafted my sleek, flowing lines and made the unique grill shells. The 64 Fairlane Hi-riser bubble fits the 427. The gold soaked Silver Pearl lacquer was drop dead stunning 30 years ago. Time hasnt been kind to it, but my fiberglass is rock solid.
The soft top needs new fabric. The seats and panels of faux ostrich are still good. The celery green shag carpet is a clue to the halcyon days when I was a uniquely beautiful, wickedly fast Vette. In tribute to Damon Runyons Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, my license plate is: NOLIYO. In an East Indian dialect it means Mongoose.
